Stāsts
Ir Otrais Pasaules karš, 1942. gads. Džavā (Indonēzijas salā), tiek turēti vairāki Japāņu armijas gūstekņi.

Šos gūstekņus uzrauga vietējās militārās personas kapteiņa Jonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto) vadībā.

Gūstekņu nometnes vadītājs ir seržants Hara (Takeshi Kitano), kuram izveidojušās labas attiecības ar kādu no gūstekņiem – Britu armijas virsnieku Džonu Lorencu (Tom Conti).

Lorencs ir miermīlīgs cilvēks, kurš labi iemācījies runāt japāņu valodā, tāpēc vairākās situācijās kalpo kā saziņas līdzeklis starp Japānas militāristiem un gūstekņiem.

Lietas nometnē sāk krasi mainīties, kad tiek ievests jauns gūsteknis, izcils Britu armijas kareivis Džeks Seliers (David Bowie)...
