Liams Liu (Ken Leung) ir ķīniešu izcelsmes amerikānis, kurš mitinās Losandželosā un mēģina gūt panākumus aktiera karjerā...

Kādu dienu, vietējā sabiedriskajā transportā viņš iepazīstas ar jaunu amerikāņu skolnieci Adelaidi Burbonu (Hayden Panettiere). Vārds pa vārdam un abi cilvēki sadraudzējas.

Lai gan Adelaida ir enerģiska, jauka un atklāta meitene, Liams nepārtraukti jūt vainas apziņu par to, ka draudzējas ar tik jaunu meiteni, tomēr Adelaida ir kā apsēsta ar Liamu.

Tāpat jauno vīrieti nomāc viņa vienmuļā un iestigusī dzīve, kā arī neveiksmes darba meklējumos un attiecībās ar tēvu.

Kādu dienu šo izmisumu pārtrauc tēva vēstījums par to, ka Šanhajā ir mirusi Liama vecmāmiņa. Lai gan Liams nekad viņu nav redzējis, vecmāmiņa atstājusi viņam mantojumā māju.

Mājai jau ir uzradušies pircēji, tāpēc Liamam tikai jādodas uz Šanhaju, lai veiktu pārdošanas darījumu, tomēr ceļojums uz savu tēvzemi izmaina Liama dzīvi – viņš iepazīstas ar skaisto Miki (Kelly Hu) un, sevis meklējumos, paspēj iekulties vairākās ķezās...
