Ir Otrais pasaules karš, Ivodzimas sala, Japānā. Norisinās gatavošanās kaujai ar Japānas galveno ienaidnieku - ASV. Salā ierodas jaunais komandieris Tadamiči Kuribajaši (Ken Watanabe), lai pārņemtu vadību pār izmisušajām un nāvei nolemtajām vienībām...

Pats Kuribajaši par nolemtības faktu uzzina tikai vēlāk, kad viņa draugs Takeiči Niši (Tsuyoshi Ihara) ierodas uz salas, lai pavēstītu, ka Imperatora flote ir sagrauta. Tāpat nedaudz vēlāk tiek paziņots, ka Japāna ir atdalījusi salu, un negrasās uz tās palikušajiem kareivjiem, sūtīt papildspēkus...

Amerikas kareivju jūra tuvojas, Japānas kareivji mirst no dizentērijas, munīcijas un pārtikas krājumi strauji izsīkst, tomēr ģenerālis nolemj nepadoties un cīnīties līdz pēdējai minūtei.

Šie traģiskie notikumi no Kuribajaši, Niši, un vienkārša kareivja Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya) acīm...
