Francija veic kodolieroču izmēģinājumus uz savas zemes Franču Polinēzijā...

Pēc vairākiem gadiem, nakts stundā, Japāņu kuģim uzbrūk milzīgs radījums. Izdzīvo tikai viens jūrnieks... Jūrnieku nogādā Panamas slimnīcā. Kad viņu sāk iztaujāt, vienīgā frāze, ko šis cilvēks spēj izteikt ir „godžira” (Godzilla, Japāņu valodā)...

Dakteris Niks Tatopoulos (Metjū Broderiks) ir zinātnieks, kas darbojas Čenobiļas zonā pie Ukrainas. Viņš pēta radiācijas ietekmi uz dzīvajiem organismiem, kad pie viņa negaidīti ierodas ASV aģenti, lai aicinātu zinātnieku izpētīt dīvainā nezvēra atstātās pēdas Panamā.

Viņiem piebiedrojas arī kāds francūzis (Žans Reno), kurš uzdodas par apdrošināšanas aģentu Filipu Rošē.

Izpētot pēdas, ir skaidrs, ka šis ir kāds milzīgs reptilis ar milzīgu spēku... Tas ir Godzilla... Drīz vien Godzilla parādās pie Ņujorkas robežām un aizsāk postījumus. Militāristi evakuē pilsētas daļas, kamēr zinātnieki, ieskaitot Niku, cenšas izdomāt, kā lai iznīcina šo briesmoni.

Tajā pat laikā neviens nenojauš, ka Filips Rošē nemaz nav apdrošināšanas aģents...
